How I Did My Own Wild & Colourful Wedding Bouquet/Wedding Bouquet DIY/ Wedding Flowers
When I got married in I really wanted a nice Bouquet of flowers but I was on quite a tight budget.
I did price up some options but because my wedding was only for 13 people, I didn’t need many other flowers. Unfortunately most florists have minimum orders.
In the end the conclusion was that I would DIY my own flowers.
I did know a local grower that I had used on a previous wedding photo shoot, and that was The Yorkshire Flower Patch
I dropped her a message and said would I be able to pick up a bucket of flowers a few days before the wedding.
I then went on the Bloom and Wild (they sell beautiful letterbox flowers) website and ordered my favourite bouquet from there. I also ordered a box of Freddie’s Flowers which I am subscribed to.
Somehow and magically I ended up with a pink, orange and green theme.
I did all the flowers in old beer cans for the table and used also dried flowers with lavender added in.
The one thing I did underestimate was how long it would take me!
A few times I had to re-do my Bouquet just because visually it didn’t look right.
Another factor I couldn’t have predicted was the heat the day before we got married the 25th of July 2019, it was a really really hot day.
So I had to make sure my flowers weren’t wilting and kept in water as much as possible.
We had to transport everything into Manchester via a hot car to when we got into the hotel room (which had Aircon, luckily!) I put the flowers in a crate straight into the bath.
I made all the buttonholes to and wrapped twine around them (which came in the Freddie’s Flowers box).
I had previously had a one-to-one with a florist and been to many workshops so I have had quite a bit of practice but really it was just whatever I liked, it definitely wasn’t perfect. I wanted wild bits and and I just kind of let the flowers do what they wanted to do. I put it together and when I was happy I stopped and put some eco friendly, hand dyed ribbon around them that I bought from Etsy.
I Would estimate my Freddie’s Flowers cost £25, Bloom & Wild bouquet was approximately £25, as well and some greenery from the garden, so really all my flowers for the table for 13 guests my big Bouquet and buttonholes cost around £60 with added ribbon.
I look at my photos from Leah, my wedding photographer and friend and I still absolutely love the colours and how it the textures were, how big it was, I just think it’s just gorgeous! Even now, nearly four years on.
I actually have them at home dried. I just let them dry on the side I am and what I’m hoping to do is get a box frame and a print and then I can put the dry flowers over the print in the box frame
The benefits of doing your own Bouquet well firstly, you save money and also means you’re creative.
The downside is it does take time and if you’re not used to it you do need a bit of practice. It can be quite stressful (If you have lots to do). I remember spending so much time and my partner asking me “What are you doing? Are you still doing this and can I help? “ I had a very particular way I wanted my flowers, even though it’s still kind of wild.
My suggestion is if you do want to try this: sign up to Bloom & Wild and wait for discounts if you want to be extra thrifty they always have emails with discount 20%/ 15% etc and see if there’s any local growers in the area. There’s also nothing wrong with getting some supermarket flowers and added them together with greenery flowers from the garden. Or even dried flowers look amazing!
My original idea was to grow plants in the garden and include them in my bouquet. I bought poppy seeds but unfortunately yellow ones came up and I wasn’t too keen on that colour. So this is another idea.
There are a few ways and Ive seen other brides do a mixture of these. I do recommend using a florist if you have something specific in mind but if you’re on a budget and want to be creative just do it!
